In North Carolina, Lange worked with two sociologists from the University of North Carolina to document agricultural traditions and race relations dating from the antebellum period and the Civil War, the seasonal cycle of harvesting and curing tobacco, and the daily lives of white and black tenants and sharecroppers. Below are three of her twenty-one General Captions for North Carolina; for the titles of others, see this list [make link]. For the full text of the other General Captions, along with selected photographs and the story of the larger documentary project in North Carolina, see the book, DARING TO LOOK.
