Among Lange’s assignments in the Pacific Northwest was to find out how settlers were doing on their new farms in the sagebrush desert of southeast Oregon, where the US Bureau of Reclamation had completed an ambitious irrigation project in 1937. The government regarded this project as an important experiment in resettling thousands of families. Lange reported on the challenges faced by the families and the growth of new churches, schools, and businesses to support the growing community. Below are three of her fifty-one General Captions for the Northwest; for the titles of others, see this list [make link]. For the full text of the other General Captions, along with selected photographs and the stories behind them, see the book, DARING TO LOOK.
