In the 1930s, thousands of Dust Bowl refugees journeyed to the Northwest in search of jobs. Some joined the army of migrant workers, others resettled on new farms in the stumplands of former forests, on irrigated deserts. Today most of the stump farms Dorothea Lange photographed in 1939 are second-growth forest.
